about

This CD was made in several bursts of activity between 2004 and late summer 2006 by exchanging CDs and e-mail attachments.. Not a single session was recorded with us both in the same room, nor indeed the same continent! Jim was in the UK and then Australia, and I in Japan. In fact, Jim and I have only met once, in the UK in August 2004, but it was clear even then, during a music session with the Freeman brothers, that we had the personal and musical chemistry to undertake a collaboration of this sort. I was keen to make this 2/3 project different from our other personal and group musical projects, and by chance or design I think we achieved that aim. I used the Roland SH-32 synthesizer on several tracks, a toy keyboard with heavy distortion on another, numerous junk sound sources, such as the sound of breaking plastic bottles and elastic bands, as well as sound samples. My contribution was assembled in Sound Sculptor II for Mac. Despite the amount of material on this CD, I feel we have only scratched the surface. So, I hope and expected another 2/3 in the future!
Nigel Harris 2006.10.22

Our somewhat odd project name derived from a key aspect which Nigel and I have in common: both of us have at different times been the third member of the Freeman brothers' improvising trios, Nigel in ZBB and myself in Endgame and its related guises. The two bands in fact cross-pollinated when Nigel and I met, to become The Zircon Game, an extraordinary four-man creation. Like Nigel, I was keen to make the 2/3 project different from our other projects, and while certain "personal stamps" in style may be discerned here and there, don't be fooled as the act of remixing each other's material in itself pulled us both away from the kind of territories we usually tend to occupy, into each other's and beyond! We won't spoil the fun by making any attempt to document what each of us did or assert who had more of a hand in whatever piece - 2/3 music is more than the sum of its parts and tends to surprise its creators too! My contribution was assembled with Sonic Foundry's Acid Pro and Sound Forge for the PC and a wealth of samples, some supplied by Nigel and others culled from my own archives. I think I can safely say we are both enthused by our joint material so far and that there'll be plenty more to come!
